There has been a lot happening in our Whitehaven Hub over the past year. Here are just some of the highlights:
- Florence Arts Centre, Egremont – free crafts 1-3pm in the afternoon
- Seascale Beach (short walks and coffee)
- Arts Project – in joint with Workington Town Council, working with an artist called Alison Critchlow, create large Canvas portrait for the Library windows to be displayed in Winter 2024
- Met RAD – Gas and Electricity Bills advice
- Met the MP in the running in the local elections – Josh McAllister – who later won the elections under Labour. I tried to encourage Josh and his party to learn BSL and they said they would like to (but never happened)
- Janet Bosson (one of the volunteers) ran a Coffee morning & Bake sale & raised a lot of money for CDA
- Alpaca walk
- Mhari from BDA came in to talk about “Deaf Rights”
- Met the Hariet Watt University Student on a work placement
- Christmas Meal – Pizzas
- Theatre by the Lake – Romeo & Juliet, and also The Jungle Book
- Glass Bauble Blowing workshop (in joint with Barrow Deaf Club)
- Pumpkin Picking
- Robin Ash from SignHealth came to do a talk
- Christmas Wreath making workshop
- Temple Spa Christmas evening – mini-pamper
- Walking Football – started at Workington in November 2024 – and ran until January 2025 – ended because of lack of interest
- 6 weeks of Ballroom Dancing with Janet B started in Nov 2024 and ran for 6 weeks
- Workington Library – Art Launch – with TV news coverage – November 2024
- Christmas Lights walk in Keswick
2025
- January 2025 – Started Wellbeing Walks – on the last Thursday of the month
- Started “BSL Student Café” once a month to allow students to practice BSL with the deaf community
- Strictly Dancing Live shows – in Glasgow – arranged an once-off trip on Sat 25th January 2025
- Rosehill Theatre “Kind Futures” Art Project, started with support with a local resident artist
- “Greenway” Art Project with Anne Knott – Workington
- “Mythical portraits” painting session – so much fun
- Feedback to NHS and Local Copeland Council / Healthwatch how Deaf people access NHS services – was set up by Healthwatch, we attended 2 sessions
- Galleon ship visit to Whitehaven harbour
- John Smith Comedy – 11th October 2025.
- Wizard of Oz planned for 13th December 2025 with BSL Interpreter.
