Cumbria Deaf Association offers placements to students who are enrolled onto a Deaf Studies course or who are training to be a British Sign Language Interpreter! Our university links are with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and University of Central Lancashire in Preston. Meet some of our previous students who have had placements at CDA!

“I’m Stewart Paterson, I’m 22, and I’m a 3rd year student from Heriot Watt University currently on work placement with Cumbria Deaf Association.
I started studying BSL with Heriot Watt after I attended an introductory afternoon course in Dumfries and became interested in learning more about the language.
Out of studying, my hobbies include playing music, baking, and gardening.”

I want to meet lots of BSL users so I can improve my sign language and make connections in the Deaf community. I will be at different Deaf events in Cumbria and I would love a chat over tea or coffee.

“Hello! My name is Beth and I’m a student from Heriot-Watt University. I’m from Whitehaven, so I couldn’t wait to do my work placement in Cumbria with the Cumbria.
I’ll be here until May, and I want to meet lots of different people so I can learn as much sign language as I can before I go back to university for my final year. I’ll be at different events throughout Cumbria and I love a chat over a cuppa!
